Deus Ex was first released in 2000, widely held up to be a master-class in RPG gameplay and promoting an open-world experience where your choices in the game have consequences. The game explores themes of secret world government, how moral choices are rarely black and white, megalomania and ambition for power, and the effects of state-sponsored terrorism, among other things. The Revision Mod itself is free, but requires a paid licence and installation of the original game.

The Revision Mod first appeared (I think!) around 2015 after the source code was open-sourced. The mod brings together a whole raft of visual and gameplay improvements but also extends and enhances many of the chapter levels, including some new secret areas to discover.
The original Deus Ex encouraged exploration of its open world levels, rewarding you with skill points in return for discovering locations.
Revision adds new areas to explore, and rewards you with minor trophies. Some levels have undergone significant rework, and if you played the original or GOTY versions you may find yourself disoriented. This guide will help you adjust.
If you’ve played the original or GOTY editions, the plot and characters will be familiar. The story remains the same (although you can fiddle with the settings for other experiences) but many of the locations have been expanded and enhanced.
In keeping with the original game, this guide shows the "Realistic" experience.
Creating a new game throws you straight in to defining your character. You have 5000 "points" to spend, but you don’t get many clues as to what’s useful, and your choices here are actually quite important! First up you can "buy" some points be de-skilling on the Pistol skill. I choose to upgrade Computer to enable me to hack computers for information, Lockpicking to open doors to otherwise unreachable areas, and Low Tech Weapons to make me more effective with non-lethal weapons like the riot prod and baton. The guide shows when I update a skill for best effect in game. I also choose to play as a female character—this changes gameplay from the original in subtle and occasionally amusing ways.
When you’re done customizing your character, a cutscene plays which sets the overall tone of the world you’ve entered.
