Deus Ex is set in the year 2052. I am writing this guide in 2025, and playing it through brought into sharp focus just how prescient Deus Ex is. The Gray Death is reminiscent of a real killer pandemic, and the conspiracy theories that accompanied it—​especially regarding the origins of the virus and the availability of vaccines—​could have been lifted straight from this game.

The conversation with the Morpheus AI in Morgan Everett's home also struck a chord as the real world struggles with the ethics and boundaries of AI. The technology of 2025 is different—​and referring to it as "AI" is lazy and inaccurate—​but the outcomes are similar, and the ethical questionability of unhindered technology is brought into sharp focus.
